Vimeo was launched in 2004. It was founded by Jakob Lodwick and Zach Klein who developed a popular humor-based website CollegeHumor. The name Vimeo was created by Jack as a play on the words “Video” and “Me”.

Initially, Vimeo was just a side project for Jakob as he was focussing on his main site CollegeHumor. Vimeo’s user base rose only by a small number during the next few years mostly by word-of-mouth.

Vimeo did not stay small for long. In August 2006, IAC acquired CollegeHumor and Vimeo, it was the same time when Google had acquired YouTube. Jake and the team were later working full-time on Vimeo to differentiate it from YouTube and other similar sites.

Soon Vimeo was the first video-sharing site to offer HD videos to users. In 2014, Vimeo supported 4K streaming, 360-degree videos by March 2017, and 8K videos in the same year.

Before the pandemic, organic subscriptions constantly accelerated last year from 11% in the first quarter of 2019 to 27% in the fourth quarter of 2019. Vimeo started marketing its service to a wider audience of small businesses and large enterprises.

Because of the pandemic, the acceleration exploded to 41% in the first quarter of 2020, 79% in the second quarter, followed by 56% in the fourth quarter.

The consistent record growth will eventually fade as the impact of the virus becomes less pronounced, but Vimeo says they’re pretty sure the demand for video isn’t narrowing any time soon.

Since Vimeo has recurring subscriptions the revenue will continue to grow. For the first time, Vimeo was profitable on an adjusted EBITDA basis in the third quarter. Vimeo earns a profit of $5 for every $1 spent on marketing, which is definitely a good number.

Vimeo has about 3,500 enterprises paying for their service. About 25% of the total revenue comes from enterprise sales and it is still growing. Net revenue retention for such sales is now surpassing 100%.

Vimeo valuation

On November 5, 2020, encouraged by the growth in Vimeo’s services due to the COVID-19, IAC and Vimeo entered into an investment deal to raise $150 million of equity investment from Thrive Capital and GIC at an enterprise value of ~$2.75 billion (~14x of FY19 revenue).

Another series of investments in January 2021 delivered an extra $300 million, inflating its total valuation to $5.7 billion. The new investment happened in two parts, the first portion of $200 million at a $5.2 billion pre-money valuation and the second portion of $100 million at a $5.7 billion pre-money valuation.
